Early Life and Education
Tanmay Arun Bhat was born in Bombay on 23 June 1990 and grew up in a Kannada Brahmin family. He attended Cosmopolitan Education Society and Sheth Chunilal Damodardas Barfiwala High School, both in Andheri.
He later studied at R. D. National College and Jai Hind College, completing a bachelor’s degree in advertising. While at R. D. National College, he started Cutting Chai Fest, a student-led media festival.
Tanmay Bhat’s Career
Bhat began working in television and comedy before building a wider audience through AIB and his independent online channels. His credits span comedy writing, stand-up, scripted advertising, streaming content and film production.
Television Writing and First Credits
Bhat made his television debut on UTV Bindass’s Hass Ley India, a comedy talent show built around performers presenting comic material to a panel and audience. He went on to write for MTV India’s Wassup and Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan. The latter was a dance programme led by choreographer Saroj Khan, while Wassup formed part of MTV India’s youth-oriented television output. He then worked on scripted television comedies for Disney India and NDTV Imagine.

His writing credits included Disney India’s Kya Mast Hai Life, a sitcom following a group of teenagers at a Mumbai school, and The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir, the Indian adaptation of Disney’s The Suite Life series. He also wrote for NDTV Imagine’s Oye! It’s Friday!, a celebrity talk show hosted by Farhan Akhtar that combined interviews and performances. He scripted television award shows, including the Filmfare Awards, Star Parivaar Awards, Balaji Awards, Big TV Awards and Stardust Awards, working on material for ceremonies built around film and television performers.
Stand-Up Comedy and Weirdass Comedy
Bhat began performing stand-up around the time he was writing for television. In 2009, he won Weirdass Ham-ateur Night, a national comic hunt organised by comedian Vir Das, and became part of Weirdass Comedy. The event gave new comics a chance to perform original sets before an audience, and Bhat’s win led into work with the comedy company.
He was also among the first four comedians to perform in the Comedy Store Mumbai’s first pan-Indian comedian lineup. Soon afterward, he worked at a stand-up event with comedians from Nepal. The early performances put him on bills alongside comedians from different parts of the region, as he continued developing material for the stage.
All India Bakchod
In 2013, Bhat co-founded All India Bakchod with Gursimran Khamba, Rohan Joshi and Ashish Shakya. The group began as a YouTube comedy channel, making short spoofs and sketches, performing stand-up and writing shows. Its “Honest Indian…” videos used mock interviews and blunt comic observations about familiar aspects of Indian life. The channel’s work also included topical sketches and comedy collaborations with actors, comedians and filmmakers.
By early 2015, AIB had expanded into a creative agency producing branded content for corporate clients. Bhat served as the company’s CEO and CFO. Its high-profile projects included AIB Knockout, a roast of actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor hosted by Karan Johar. The filmed event circulated widely online, with the performers and guests taking part in a scripted comedy roast built around jokes about the two actors.
Advertising and Creative Production
Bhat appeared in a 2016 Netflix advertisement in which he impersonated Pablo Escobar, the central character of the crime drama Narcos. The spot drew on his comic impersonation and Netflix’s promotion of the series. From 2020 to 2021, he co-wrote scripts for CRED advertisements featuring public figures including Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Bappi Lahiri, Ravi Shastri, Anil Kapoor, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev and Neeraj Chopra. The campaign paired well-known personalities with short comic premises written for the financial technology company.
His production work included the Hindi comedy film Chintu Ka Birthday, released in 2020, on which he served as a producer. Written and directed by Satyanshu Singh and Devanshu Singh, the film follows a family trying to celebrate a young child’s birthday in Iraq during the 2004 war. It stars Vinay Pathak and Tillotama Shome and was released on ZEE5. He was creative producer of the 2021 Hindi film 14 Phere, a romantic comedy directed by Devanshu Singh and starring Vikrant Massey and Kriti Kharbanda.
Film and Television Appearances
Tanmay Bhat had a cameo in the 2014 film Ragini MMS 2, a supernatural horror film starring Sunny Leone, and appeared in the 2015 film Mr. X, a science-fiction thriller starring Emraan Hashmi. He also appeared as a guest judge in two episodes of the comedy show India’s Got Latent, joining its panel to respond to contestants’ performances.
In 2018, he judged the first season of Amazon Prime Video’s stand-up competition Comicstaan. The series brought aspiring comics together to perform different styles of stand-up, with judges and mentors offering feedback across the competition. Bhat sat on the panel alongside comedians including Kaneez Surka, Kenny Sebastian and Kanan Gill. He was removed from the judging panel for the second season after allegations concerning a former AIB freelancer became public.
YouTube Channels and Online Shows
In mid-2019, Bhat launched the YouTube channel Tanmay Bhat, posting vlogs, comedy sketches, reaction videos and video essays. The channel gave his work a regular home outside the group projects of AIB. He returned to gaming streams in November 2019, initially streaming PUBG: Battlegrounds, the multiplayer battle royale game. He later launched a second channel, Honestly by Tanmay Bhat, for learning streams and videos featuring experts.

In January 2020, he joined YouTuber Saiman Says and several comedians for TreeMathon 2020, an eight-hour stream playing Getting Over It to raise funds for Mission Green Mumbai’s tree-planting effort. The game’s difficult climbing controls supplied the stream’s challenge as the participants played and entertained viewers. In April 2020, Bhat and Kaneez Surka hosted an eight-hour livestream over two days, raising more than ₹1.7 million for charities working against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Netflix India launched Tanmay Reacts in 2020, a series in which Bhat reacted to films and television shows. Its guests included Vicky Kaushal, R. Madhavan, Kunal Kamra and Hanumankind, who joined him to watch and discuss screen content. The series also featured reactions to memes and online videos with comedians and creators, extending the format from film and television clips to material circulating on social media.
Controversies
In May 2016, Bhat posted a Snapchat video impersonating Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar in a mock argument about cricket. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena filed an FIR, and Mumbai police wrote to Google and YouTube requesting removal of the video. In 2017, he was booked and an FIR was filed over a Snapchat meme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The reported accounts do not give the outcomes of either case.
In October 2018, writer and comedian Mahima Kukreja accused AIB freelancer Utsav Chakraborty of sending lewd messages and images to women. Bhat, then AIB’s CEO, was among comedians criticised for knowing about the allegations and continuing to work with Chakraborty. On 8 October, AIB announced that Bhat would step away from the company for the time being. Amazon removed him from the second season of Comicstaan.
In May 2019, AIB said Bhat was no longer suspended but had been removed as CEO. He later said in Instagram videos that he had clinical depression. Kukreja and comedian Aditi Mittal criticised his comments and questioned their sincerity.
Recent Developments
In October 2026, Mint reported that Chapter Home, a home and kitchen brands company founded by former PharmEasy executives, raised ₹63 crore with backing from Bhat, Bessemer Venture Partners and Stride Ventures. The reported amount was the company’s funding round, not a disclosed personal investment by Bhat.
Social Media Presence
Bhat’s verified Instagram account, @tanmaybhat, had about 2.1 million followers and roughly 1,400 posts as of October 2026. His Instagram bio describes him as a comedian, entrepreneur and curious person.
